Knotty Problem - Political Cartoon
The Knotty Problem of Capitol Hill, Finding a Way to Raise Taxes without Losing a Single Vote

Between 1941 and 1943, at the height of World War II, Ted Geisel delivered over 400 hard-hitting editorial cartoons addressing prominent sociopolitical issues of the day, including isolationism, racism and anti-Semitism.
Thrust into the midst of a raging war, Knotty Problem portrays the Washingtonian dilemma of needing to raise taxes as the country ramps up its armed forces, while figuring out a way to do so without jeopardizing their Congressional Seats. Seuss’s keen observations are consistently evergreen and sixty-six years later, we find the 110th Congress facing a similar situation.
In this cartoon we see Seuss depicting Congressmen as they go about their time-honored tradition of finding a way to raise taxes without losing a single vote. Able to deliver substantial ideas to us in a humorous way, Seuss depicts Congress hard at work using plumb bobs, T-squares, surveyors’ transits, scales and drawing compasses.
This humorous political prescription from “The Good Doctor” may just be what the country needs. Dr. Seuss for President in 2008! |
